Looking your best for Easter. The expression doesn't exist for nothing. Whether you're in church in the morning, have planned an Easter brunch with your in-laws, or are going to the garden to hunt for Easter eggs with your offspring: you want to look your best. Of course, a real dandy doesn't need an excuse to look good. The fact that one is alive is reason enough in itself. Still, you can seize the opportunity to do something extra.
Easter is the festival of soft colours. Pastel shades to be precise. This has to do with several things. Easter is a spring festival. Spring is the season of soft things: temperatures, fertility, and so on. The fields are getting colour again, it is hazy outside because of the pollen. And of course the painted Easter egg dries in a matt, soft tone. Furthermore, this season celebrates the
fertility. That is why soft, fresh colours are appropriate. As a display of virginity, so to speak. What is more suitable for this than earthy, soft colours? But where do these pleasant, soft colours originate?
The colours of Easter are originally liturgical colours. Liturgical stands for 'the tradition of worship' and is originally ecclesiastical. The liturgical colours change seasonally and show the underlying sentiment of the different feasts and seasons. The colours chosen by the church for Easter are white, red, violet, pink and green.
The colours white, red, purple, pink and green were of course chosen for a reason. All these colours symbolise a part of spring, and the celebration of it. That's all well and good, but how do we translate this into perfect suspenders for Easter? Because although tradition must be honoured, the eye also wants something. And of course appearance is more important than symbolic meaning.
