Braces and the Brexit a strange combination or not? The first mention of suspenders in the history books is not in England, but in America. In 1736 Benjamin Franklin founded the first volunteer fire department in Philadelphia and instructed the firefighters to wear red suspenders. But the connection between the English and suspenders goes back a long way.
In 1820, Albert Thurston opened a braces shop in London. He saw a gap in the market because trousers with a high waistband were in fashion, and a belt was not comfortable with this. Now, some 200 years later, the British still know their way to his shop for the distinctive accessory. Albert Thurston can count not only many famous British people among its clients, but also film stars, kings, princes and presidents.
On June 23, 2016, the British decided by referendum to leave the EU. They find the free trade, no tariffs for import/export and no delays at the border that come with EU membership perfect. But the interference from Brussels that imposes more and more rules and laws is very annoying. In addition, membership of the EU costs them a lot of money. Margret Thatcher negotiated a special discount for this in 1979, but the British still find this too much.
After the referendum in 2016, it took until 29 March 2017 before the British informed Brussels by letter that they wanted to leave the EU. Because there are many complications associated with a Brexit, a departure procedure of 2 years was drawn up. This period would expire on 29 March 2019.
We now know that this deadline was not met. Because Prime Minister May was unable to get the Brexit agreements through the British parliament, she resigned, after which the EU granted the British an extension until 31 October 2019. The new Prime Minister Boris Johnson is currently negotiating a new deal with the EU.
Boris Johnson is very close to a new deal, but he too cannot get it done by the set date. The Prime Minister is once again requesting an extension and has been granted one by the EU. The new deadline is 31 January 2020. During this time, Johnson must manage to get the new Brexit deal through the British parliament.
There are many agreements that need to be made for the British to leave the EU without chaos. The four decades in which the British were part of the EU have ensured that there were many good agreements and we do not want to undo these with a Brexit. It is now a matter of waiting to see how Boris Johnson will bring this to a successful conclusion.
Will anything change when the British leave the EU for buying braces? Not really. The expectation is that the prices will go up a bit because of the administrative procedures that have to be done at customs.
We do have some fashion advice for politicians who are closely involved in Brexit. It is of course important that you look good as a politician during important discussions. Braces are a good addition to your outfit.
As Prime Minister, Boris Johnson may go for a classic look. We have a few stylish white suspenders chosen by Albert Thurston. These distinctive braces are also worn by James Bond. Class that you can be seen with and that exudes authority. This is what Johnson needs to guide Brexit through the British parliament.
Jeremy Corbyn is the leader of the Labour Party in Great Britain. He is actually the opponent of Boris Johnson who belongs to the conservative party. We have also selected a pair of braces for Jeremy Corbyn. These are red suspenders by Profuomo. The bold colour represents the way the Labour Party is fiercely opposed to Brexit. His party would rather remain in the EU.
As President of the European Council, Donald Tusk is very busy making the agreements for the Brexit deal. As President, we would like to see Donald with blue Profuomo braces . Profuomo braces are made in Poland, the country where Donald Tusk comes from and was Prime Minister for 7 years. These distinctive blue braces complement the dark blue suits he often wears.
Finally, we have some style advice for our own Prime Minister, Mark Rutte. Our Prime Minister is always well dressed in a nice suit. A pair of suspenders would look great with that. As advice, we have a few blue with yellow suspenders by Hein Strijker. This Dutch brand has a collection of stylish braces in different colours. It makes an outfit complete.
Brexit will have little effect on us, but politicians in Great Britain in particular will be busy with it in the coming months. It would be nice if there is an agreement on 31 January 2020 so that the British can leave the EU without any problems and all cooperation can continue.
